Rebuilding the heart of Christchurch
When the commercial heart of Christchurch city centre was devastated in the earthquakes, businesses were forced to move their offices to the outskirts of town. May 2016 marked the beginning of the development of the south-west block of Christchurch’s new retail precinct.
Cook Brothers Construction was greatly involved in the Christchurch rebuild from the very beginning and were once again engaged as the main contractor to carry out works on a very significant development - the first new building of Cashel Mall. The block, anchored by Ballantynes and Re: Start Mall, has not seen any new construction since the earthquakes.
Cook Brothers Construction worked closely with Cequent Projects, mall operators and the Christchurch City Council to minimise disruption to the surrounding businesses whilst still keeping on track with the agreed programme on this tight site with limited access.
The 4 storey building features 2000 square metres of space to let and a loft-style apartment on the top floor. Design features include basalt panels, frameless glass shopfronts, a planted roof, and an upper balcony. Shops face both Cashel St and Plymouth Lane.
