He Waka Tapu, He Waka Hou Trust and Cook Brothers Construction are thrilled to announce the opening of the Ahikā affordable housing project in Wainoni, Christchurch East.

The newly built homes at the Ahikā Housing Project were made possible under New Zealand’s Affordable Housing regulations. Designed with the community in mind, these homes offer a unique blend of modern amenities and sustainable living.

This initiative was more than just a construction project; it's a journey towards creating a vibrant and sustainable community for local whānau and the wider community. Designed with the community in mind, these homes offer a unique blend of modern amenities and sustainable living, guided by kaupapa Māori values.

These homes feature modern interiors with freshly painted walls, high-quality joinery and fittings, and come equipped with heat pumps, vinyl flooring, and carpeted bedrooms. The stylish bathrooms are fitted with shower glass enclosures and bathroom hardware, and the fully functional kitchens are complete with whiteware installations, glass splashbacks, and ample storage.

Emphasising sustainable living, the homes are equipped with solar panels for energy efficiency. Outdoor spaces include paved pathways, landscaped gardens, and dedicated bike stands.

The completion of this project realises a 30 year dream of He Waka Tapu's founder Papa D. “Right from the start I always felt what we needed was housing, especially for those who were nowhere, they’d lost their family, nowhere to go, City Mission couldn’t take them. So, for the last 30 years we’ve been working out how to build some housing….We’re hoping that this is the beginning of something that’s going to carry, and we’ll do it again.”
We wish to extend a massive thanks to all our amazing trade partners and stakeholders who contributed to this kaupapa.
